Welcome to the Midland Counties Field Trial Society, we hope you find this site useful.
A little bit of our History.....
The Midland Counties Field Trial Society was founded in 1920 and in that same year we held our first Retriever trial at Lilford which was won by T W Twyfords with Tag of Whitemore. The first 2 day Open Retriever Trial was held on 6th and 7th October 1921 at Newport Shropshire and was won by J H Hume with St Mary's Sweep.
Our first Spaniel trial was held on 9th November 1921 in Biggin near Oundle which was won by H W Carltons with Foel Poncho.
No trials took place between1939-1945 due to the war and in 1954 unfortunately due to myxomatosis all trials were cancelled.
The first all Cocker Spaniel Open stake was held on 13th December 1955 at Apethorpe and was won by Major Peacock with Merlin Minimus. Major Peacock was a Secretary for the club and the first person to qualify for all 3 Championships (Springers, Cockers and Retrievers) in the same year.
Keith Chudley was Chairman of the Society for a number of years and was the first handler to handle in all 3 Championships in the same year which has only been done once since by Mr David Lisett.
Only 1 dog won the open stake 3 years on the trot which was Labrador dog Hiwood Dipper in 1958, 1959 and 1960.
The Society always tries to hold trials in its area which cover Warwick, Northampton, Cambridge, Leicester, Derby, Nottingham, Stafford, Bedford, Oxford, Buckingham, Lincoln, Norfolk, Suffolk, Essex, Worcester, Gloucester, Hereford, Hertford, Shropshire and Cheshire.
The Society's biggest Host is the President of the Society.
The Open Springer Trial has been held at Grimsthorpe since 1990. Grimsthorpe has in the past been home to both the Cocker and Springer Spaniel Championships. In 1986 and 1987 the Retriever 2 day Open was also held there. We currently have the Carlton trophy and the Alington trophy which have been with the Society since the 1920's and for this the Society are truly privileged.
We are pleased to announce our new sponsor for this season, and hopefully many more, Hoddys.
